Arrived at Padua at two o' clock. In the middle of a rich vineyard stands the Baptistery, the great work of Giotto; the walls covered entirely with frescoes by him; one wall the life of Mary, the other the life of Christ; the ceiling blue with gold stars and medallion pictures: the west wall a great picture of Heaven and Hell suggested to him by Dante who, weary of trudging up the steep stairs, as he says, of the Scaligeri when in exile at Verona, came to stay at Padua with Giotto in a house still to be seen there. Of the beauty and purity of sentiment, the clear transparent colour, bright as the day it was painted, and the harmony of the whole building, I am unable to tell you. He is the first of all painters. We stayed over an hour in the Baptistery filled with wonder and reverence and above all love for the scenes he has painted.
Arrivammo a Padova alle due. In mezzo a una ricca vigna sorge il Battistero, la grande opera di Giotto; le pareti sono interamente coperte di suoi affreschi: su una parete la vita di Maria, sull’altra la vita di Cristo; il soffitto, azzurro con stelle d’oro e medaglioni; la parete occidentale, un grande quadro del Paradiso e dell’Inferno, suggerito a lui da Dante che, stanco di salire, come dice, le ripide scale degli Scaligeri durante l’esilio a Verona, venne a soggiornare a Padova con Giotto in una casa che si vede ancora lì. Della bellezza e purezza del sentimento, del colore chiaro e trasparente, luminoso come il giorno in cui fu dipinto, e dell’armonia dell’intero edificio, non saprei dirti. Egli è il primo di tutti i pittori. Restammo più di un’ora nel Battistero, colmi di meraviglia e riverenza e, soprattutto, di amore per le scene che ha dipinto.
